Can I receive assistance to repair my furnace if it doesn't work?
Yes. If you own your furnace, you may be able to receive up to $500 from the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) to repair or maintain it. To qualify, your furnace must be broken or must be unsafe and in need of repair.
How do I apply for a grant to repair my furnace?
First, you should go to the first floor of the Rath Building, 95 Franklin Street, Buffalo, and ask for help.
What documents should I take to the Department of Social Services (DSS)?
Make sure to bring records that show that you own your home. This could include a deed, a tax bill or receipt, or a mortgage payment receipt.
You must also bring at least two estimates from dealers which state that the furnace doesn't work or is unsafe and in need of repair and which gives the cost of repair.
Who approves requests for a furnace replacement?
If you are eligible for furnace replacement, you will be referred to the Clarkson Center or Supportive Services for further assistance.
There is no set limit on replacement costs. The Clarkson Center/Supportive Services will get the estimates for you; the majority of furnaces can be replaced for under $1600.
