Can I get Interim Assistance?

You may qualify for Interim Assistance through the Safety Net Program if you:

1. have applied for SSI and are waiting to see if you will get disability benefits; or
2. you are appealing your denial or suspension of SSI benefits; or
3. your SSI has been stopped.

When will my Interim Assistance end?

Your Interim Assistance will end once you start getting your SSI benefits.

Do I have to repay the money I get from Interim Assistance once I receive my SSI benefits?

Yes. You must sign a repayment agreement with the Department of Social Services when you apply for Interim Assistance. Once you get SSI benefits, your first retroactive SSI check is sent to DSS. DSS deducts any money they gave you while you were waiting for your SSI. DSS then sends you any money that is left over.

When will DSS send me my share of the money?

DSS must send you your share of the money, if any, within 10 days.

Can DSS make me repay money from my monthly SSI check?

No. DSS can only deduct money they paid you from your first retroactive SSI check. DSS cannot take money from your regular SSI checks.
